Herðubreiðarlindir, Drekagil Gully,
Askja Caldera, Víti Explosion Crater
From Akureyri we go straight to the highlands and drive across vast stretches of sand and fields of lava on a rugged mountain track towards Mt. Herðubreið, Iceland’s national mountain. A short stop is made at Herðubreiðarlindir, an oasis in the desert. The Drekagil gully is explored before driving into the Askja caldera where we park next to craters from the 1961 eruption. From there we walk to Lake Askja and Víti, an explosion crater formed in 1875. The more adventurous people have the opportunity to take a bath in the crater pond (don’t forget a towel). On the way back we can enjoy a stop at “Mountain Café” in Möðrudalur, the most remote settlement in Iceland.
This tour is also available from Lake Mývatn.
