In this tour your will experience some of the most magnificent landscape Iceland has to offer.
The trail is mostely on a gravel roads as well on some of our greatest singletrack routes. Beautiful hot springs, mountains and the nature reserve of Landmannalaugar offer an unforgettable experience. An English-speaking guide will bike with the group all the time and driver will follow the group in a 4WD vehicle that carries all the luggage. The vehicle will serve as a resting place for those who need it and for those getting too far behind to catch up with the group. The tour is suitable for people reasonably fit but is not recommended for children younger than 12 – 15 years old.
Day 1 – Reykjavik – Dómadalur / 35 km
Cyclists will be picked up at their hotels between 8 a.m. and 9 a.m. The day begins by driving east out of Reykjavik on route 26, arriving in Dómadalur around noon. From Dómadalur we bike through a landscape of lava fields and black deserts. The most famous and active volcano Hekla is on our right side all a long. Night in a mountain hut.
Day 2 – Dómadalur – Landmannalaugar / 25 km
Early start from Landmannahellir to Frostastadavatn lake all the way to Landmannalaugar natural pools. Here we have a opportunity to hike around this area and take a great bathe in the hot natural pools. If your are interested, a 9 km single track bike route to Ljótapollur can be added to this day trip. Night in a mountain hut.
Day 3 – Landmannalaugar – Eldgjá – Hólaskjól / 40 km
This day we bike from Landmannalaugar on the direction east, along the Fjallabak´s north route. Our day ends in the mountain hut Hólaskjól where we spend two nights.
Day 4 – Hólaskjól – Sveinstindur – Hólaskjól / 30 km
The tour start by driving from Hólaskjól to Langisjór, cycling along the Skaftá river. We continue along the river, around Eldgjá volcanic canyon all the way to our mountain hut. Second night at Hólaskjól.
Day 5 – Hólaskjól- Mælifellssandur – Emstrur / 45 km
We begin the day on a highland road which is actually on black sand. You get magnificent view since you have a glacier on your left side. We continue towards the south coast crossing the famous Laugavegur hiking trail. Drive back to Reykjavik with arrival in the afternoon.
Biking distance: ~160 – 180 kilometers.
Duration: 5 days / 4 nights
Level: Challenging for intermediate cyclist with basic off-road riding skills and a good physical skills.
