Day 1 Your expert guides will pick you up from your accommodations in Reykjavik and before the tour starts we will have a short briefing on the adventures that lie ahead. We then load up our luggage and board the specially modified 4×4 off-road vehicle that is waiting for us outside.
Our first stop is the lava caves in the Blue Mountains, just outside of Reykjavík. We will walk and crawl through the ancient lava field and learn about the way Iceland was formed and continues to take shape as we are speaking. We then press onwards towards the mountains of the South shore before we take a turn to the north in the valley of Þórsmörk the legendary Thundergod! This trail is one of Iceland’s most famous off-road tracks and we will drive over several rivers. We will have a packed lunch outside at Seljalandsfoss, the 60 meter high waterfall where you can walk behind and see from the inside out!
Just 15 minutes from our chalet we will stop at the Stakkholtsgjá Canyon and go for an unforgettable hike into the narrow, spectacular riverbed. We will then relax and enjoy an Icelandic lamb BBQ dinner in the tranquil highland setting of Þórsmörk valley. High mountains frame Þórsmörk in, and the valley is guarded by three towering glaciers, the Mýrdalsjökull, Eyjafjallajökull and Tindfjallajökull glaciers. This is guaranteed to be one of the most impressive places you will ever visit. Our night is spent in a cozy sleeping bag accommodation in the Básar Chalets.
Day 2 Our second day of adventure commences with a drive from Þórsmörk and down to the highway. The first stop is Skógar Waterfall followed by an adventurous off-roading trip on the black sand beach endlessly pounded by the North Atlantic Ocean and formed by the Sólheimajökull outlet glacier over thousands of years. From the beaches we will drive up along the Jökulsá Glacier River to the aforementioned Sólheimajökull glacier. There we will strap on crampons (spikes for the soles of our shoes) and go for a glacier walk on the blue ice. Your guide will tell you all about the Icelandic glaciers and the changes they suffer these days.
Throughout our 2 days we will cross our fingers in the hopes of spotting the otherworldly green and red showers of light that are the Aurora Borealis – commonly known as the Northern Lights. If we are lucky enough to see this legendary display of colors, it will make for memories lasting a lifetime.
On our way home to Reykjavík we will have anl stop in the small town of Eyrarbakki and an option to dine at one of the local seafood restaurants, a great way to sample the local cuisine and share our favorite stories from the last 2 days.
We should be back in Reykjavík in the late evening.
